Biography

Faris AlShafar is a a self-taught Emirati artist currently based between Dubai, UAE and Brooklyn, New York. His artworks, often depicting seamlessly intertwining biomorphic forms and dynamic textures, aim to explore the spectrums of form, ornamentation and the notion of abstractions as sentient beings in and of themselves.

In 2021, as part of his postgraduate Optional Practical Training (OPT), Faris was tasked with the curation of a three-year major exhibition for The Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the UN in New York City. This included a collaboration with the distinguished Barjeel Art Foundation in order to select, curate and logistically coordinate the three-year loan for the Mission. In 2022, Faris completed the second half of his OPT as an intern at the Consulate General of the United Arab Emirates in New York. Here, he took on the role of an advisor to the Public Diplomacy team, presenting research and developing programs that achieve dual cultural objectives between the United Arab Emirates and the United States. For the UAE’s 50th anniversary, Faris was provided the opportunity to curate Jubilee, an exhibition showcasing Emirati art in celebration of the UAE’s seat on the UN Security Council.
