“Hayao Miyazaki's 1986 animated film, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, is one of my favorite childhood films. The backgrounds in his films have always fascinated me, this work is inspired by the setting of Laputa, particularly the way the ruins were created.”
In Untitled 2, a more playful and experimental approach is taken by the artist to capture a different film by the same director. Miyazaki’s animated film, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, presents a sea of bubbly spores that emerge from fungus called Fukai, or the Sea of Decay. These filaments and tree limbs are the director’s depiction of a future of Earth that is slowly consumed by a toxic jungle. In Rua’s interpretation, this deadly forest is transformed into a lively and vibrant intertwining of forms and colors.
